Why Another Edition Of “Song Of Myself”?

The long poem by Walt Whitman, “Song Of Myself,” is universally accepted as his finest single work. It is considered a mystical masterpiece of spirituality of worldwide importance and interest. But – it is 1,333 lines of free verse. And when it first appeared in print, as the opening poem in Whitman’s first edition of Leaves Of Grass -- it bore no title. Nor was not divided into sections, for easier comprehension. So, it appeared as a mystery to be solved, with few clues given.

Because it is not a poem constructed on obvious, logical principles, readers naturally found it daunting. Most gave up trying. (How many people do you know who have read it in its entirety?)

Whitman became aware of this, and in the second edition of Leaves Of Grass gave it the title it now bears: “Song Of Myself.” That made it somewhat easier to understand.

More importantly, he divided it into fifty-two numbered sections. This made it much more user-friendly. And yet some of the sections were quite long – several pages long – and, on close reading were found to contain sub-sections not indicated by number or spacing.

And four of the sections were not only unusually long, but also had as their subjects extensive catalogs of listed items or described historical events which stood out as being very different from the mystical, spiritual concerns of the poem.

The editor of this edition has made three kinds of changes, to remove these difficulties.

  1. There are now seventy-six rather than fifty-two numbered sections because it was felt that in several of Whitman’s numbered divisions there actually are two or three or even four separate compositions. Indicating these by number and title seemed called for.
  2. Each numbered section now has a title. The title is taken from the section itself: it is in Whitman’s words. It alerts the reader to what will follow. Now the sections appear as what they are – poems in themselves, although contributing to the whole. Some are amazingly complete.
  3. The four long sections which are catalogs or descriptions of historical events now appear in an appendix rather than in the poem itself.

Other than that, no changes have been made in the original work. The words – with the exception of those transferred to the appendix – appear in the order in which they first appeared. Nothing is omitted, changed, or added. The editor hopes that Whitman would have approved of this attempt to bring his splendid poem to a happier readership.
